Some Chinese people believe that eating the animal gallbladder may improve their visual acuity. To investigate the effect of bile acid and bile alcohol on visual acuity, male Long-evans rats were used as experimental animals. Forty-eight rats were divided into two sections: streptozotocin (STZ) and non-STZ sections. The rats of STZ and non-STZ sections were daily treated with STZ (60 mg/kg, i.p.) and saline (0.6 ml) for 4 days, respectively. After STZ treatment, the rats were tested to be all glycosuria. Then the rats in each section were again divided into four groups. Each group had 6 rats and the rats were treated orally at 3-days periodic treatment with saline (control group), 10 mg of cholic acid, 20 mg of cholic acid and 10 mg of cyprinol sulfate. During 29-days experimental period, the relative ratio of liver and kidney weight to body weight, the concentrations of RBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit in the blood, the levels of AST, ALT, ALP, BUN and creatinine in the plasma of rats were not significantly different. However, levels of plasma glucose, liver thiobarbituric acid-relative substances (TBARS) and cornea vitamin A in the rats treated with STZ were higher than those of rats treated without STZ. The values of three indicators were not significantly reduced when the rats were treated with cholic acid and cyprinol sulfate in STZ or non-STZ section. It indicated that cholic acid and cyprinol sulfate could not ameliorate the eye damage of rats induced by STZ.
